General:
Annual herb from fibrous roots; stems erect, 10-50 cm tall, usually unbranched, coarse-hairy below becoming glandular-hairy upward.
Leaves:
Opposite or some of the upper leaves alternate or offset, unstalked, lanceolate, 1-4 cm long, coarsely toothed, distinctly veined, glandular-hairy.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a leafy-bracted, terminal, spike-like cluster of several to many, nearly unstalked flowers; corollas yellow, tubular, 1.5-2 cm long, 2-lipped, the upper lip hood-like, the lower lip 3-lobed; calyces sticky-hairy, tubular, 1-1.5 cm long, 4-toothed, the teeth lanceolate, about as long as the tube; stamens 4, the anthers hairy.
Fruits:
Capsules, lance-cylindric, hairy; seeds numerous, small, smooth.

Habitat / Range

Moist fields, pastures and grassy or sandy clearings in the lowland zone; frequent on S Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and adjacent lower mainland; introduced from Europe.
